MATERNITY BRAS - DOES YOUR CUP RUNNETH OVER?
My, you're looking swell... that's a common remark made during pregnancy and it doesn't always relate to a growing stomach, but to a growing bust too.
Each breast can increase by up to half a kilogram during pregnancy which puts additional strain on skin and soft tissue. Without the correct bra support, this could cause significant strain in the nearby muscles – meaning that the happy event could literally become a ‘pain in the neck’.
You also want to feel good during this time of change. All the changes that take place during pregnancy can be a little unsettling and sometimes a bit overwhelming, and it is important that maternity lingerie not only supports your body where it matters, but also lifts your spirits.Always purchase maternity lingerie from an established manufacturer to ensure that you look good and feel great - and that the bra works properly too.
Size does count.Don't delay buying a maternity bra by squeezing into your regular ones.Don't try and save money by buying bras a size bigger than you currently need.Money's not the issue here.An ill-fitting maternity bra can damage breast tissue, cause back and neck pain and erode the wearer's self-confidence.
When it comes to supporting your bust, the back of the bra is the most important aspect.
There's truth in the old saying that what goes up, must come down! If your bra is riding up your back, the front will be sagging down. Most maternity bras have more hook and eye adjustments on the back strap than normal bras to allow for expansion. When you buy the bra, it should fit on the tightest hook, which will allow you to loosen the band as you grow.To make sure the fit is right, pop your fingers into the top area of the cup and see if there's room for growth.
There should be extra cushioning in the shoulder straps and wide side bands.Bras manufactured from cotton or wicking microfibre are best, especially for warmer climates or if your body temperature feels warmer during pregnancy.
The bra cups are made from special fabric that stretches and supports the growing breasts. There should be no 'spillage' - the cups ought to be large enough to cover the whole breast !
Underwire bras are not a good option during pregnancy as the wires can dig into the breast tissue causing a blockage in the ducts, when can then lead to painful mastitis.Wire-free bras can give the same level of support as underwire ones do.
During your term, you'll need at least two maternity bras.As some women sleep in their bras to give them added comfort and support, maternity bras need to be flexible and comfortable to stretch with movement. Some new mothers also carry on wearing them after the birth, so it may be an idea to get a couple of extra ones (particularly because of the moisture and milk that comes with breastfeeding).
In a nutshell (are we talking coconut shell here?!), here's a brief outline of what you should look for in a maternity bra.
* Your maternity bra must be comfortable and supportive (no underwire bras)
* Make sure the size is right
* The back strap mustn't be too tight and should be designed to allow for expansion
• Shoulder straps should be wide, supportive and shouldn’t dig into the skin
