Buying a Leather Heavy Bag
A leather heavy bag is specially designed to standup to years of abuse; it also helps a boxer perfect their punch. It is designed to closely replicate the response that a gloved fist will have on a human body.
Although boxing gyms tend to have a wide range of different boxing bags available to members, most have at least one leather heavy bag. A typical heavy bag, regardless of type weighs between forty and one-hundred pounds. The weight of the bag should all depend on your size and strength.
For instance, if you weigh between 150 and 170 pounds, you can make due with a seventy pound bag; however a professional boxer in the same weight frame should opt for a higher weight to accommodate for more forceful punches. A lightweight bag, such as one 40 pounds in weight, will do for a featherweight boxer.
Your average leather heavy bag is constructed with thick leather; in fact, it is similar to the leather used by motorcycle riders. Although the thickness of the leather can vary, it is usually ¼ of an inch thick. Whether the boxer is using boxing gloves or bag gloves, this thick leather helps it withstand many hits. Leather boxing bags are not only popular among the boxers and the average exerciser, but they are also a preferred choice among those practicing mixed martial arts.
Leather is a natural product and this means there is some care and maintenance. For example, most boxing gyms will clean the bag with a leather cleaner once and week and they usually require users to wipe down the bag after use. A coat of leather conditioner can be applied to the bag as needed; this helps to prevent brittleness. While impressive to onlookers, most boxers would rather not have the leather shatter from a strong punch.
A heavy bag is essential to building stamina as well as coordination. To ensure the bag doesn’t sway too much with punches, choosing the proper size is a must. A swaying bag due to the wrong weight makes it difficult for the user to hit. Injury and pain can occur if a boxer uses the wrong bag, especially if it is too heavy.
The other consideration is how to properly hang a heavy bag. Leather bags can usually work with different types of mounting systems. For example, boxing centers tend to use either wall mounts or ceiling mounts. When these mounting systems are not an option, a heavy bag stand can be used.
If you want to buy a leather heavy bag, there are many factors you must take into consideration: choose the right bag size and weight for your size and skill level and ensure it is easy to mount in your home or gym. Whether you want to train as a boxer or just get a good workout, a heavy bag is ideal.
