How to take care of running shoes?

My parents just hired me a personal trainer to help me get in shape for field hockey and because I want to be able to run with my dad, but he doesn't have time to train me. I really want to take care of these shoes and make them last, because they are really nice shoes. I also have a custom made insert from the doctor if that matters. How can I make them last?
Well eventually after running plenty of miles in any type of shoe it's eventually going to have to be replaced, obviously some quicker than others. I have a Mizuno Wave Runner shoe which is very similar that I've had for almost half a year now and they are still working great through trails that I've run with mud (learned my lesson), through concrete trails, hiking trails, etc.
It's a good shoe, but don't focus too much on your shoes. Focus on running in them, breaking them in, and getting in shape so subsequently everything else will fall into place in regards to your fitness plan.
Also, I do a lot of road running (or running on concrete) and these shoes are very good about that. Some shoes I've had really hurt and don't seem to absorb much shock, but these do really well through various terrains.
