HITTING THE JACKPOT WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING CHILDREN’S SPORTS CLUBS
Many parents complain that all they ever seem to do is drive their kids around (whilst their kids drive them mad!) It’s a familiar cry – parents say their kids are involved in much, much more than they ever were and it’s very tricky to fit it everything in. In trying to bring up superkids, parents are having to be superhuman.
It’s true – children today generally are involved in a far greater spectrum of activities and sports than their parents did and they lead full and busy lives. And because lives are so busy, it’s easy to put convenience as the top priority when choosing the venues for kids’ activities, which isn’t always the best choice.
How often have parents succumbed to a child’s insistence on doing a certain sport or extramural such as karate lessons, art, horse riding, ballet or judo?. When it comes to selecting the dance teacher, karate club etc, time-poor parents often just do a quick search on the internet or go with the flow with what the friends are doing without proper research. Convenience is a key element – but quality is even more vital.
We talked to an expert on what criteria should be considered when making choices about kids’ activities. Grant Rollinson, 4th Dan and kids karate professional in Perth, Western Australia had the following advice:
1. Choose a club that is well-established with a good reputation. What people say they do and what they actually do is not always the same. Get contact details for some of the club’s existing customers and get their honest views.
2. Make a decision from the head and not the heart. Check their quality standards and their operating principles.
3. Good clubs should always allow customers to try it out first (either via a gift voucher, free session etc). People do unwittingly get conned into signing long-term contracts that don’t have an exit clause, and they’re unable to get out of the commitment. If a club owner is confident of their product, they’ll happily put it to the test.
4. Choose a club where adults are clearly playing a role as mentors and role models.
5. In the case of a martial arts centre, respect, etiquette, integrity and discipline are key attributes.
6. Don’t be afraid to have a good, long look at a potential club or centre before making a decision. Any extramural activity requires investment, both in time and in money – so it needs to be money well spent..
7. It is often a good idea to look for a club that is represented in more than one town or city (even country), so that if you move or your life changes, you won’t have to start from the beginning in another location.
8. First impressions count. Did the place look clean, safe and welcoming? Were all your questions answered honestly and transparently ?
9. Take your time before signing any contract. Make sure you read the small print and understand all your obligations.
While these tips are primarily for choosing a kids karate club, they can be applied across the board to all bodies providing an extramural service, sport or activity – from basketball clubs to band school.
It’s not easy finding a harmonious balance between work, home and leisure time. So while choosing what sports club our kids go to may not seem like a life changing decision, it does matter. A carefully considered choice will make a difference.
